Fotobook - A WordPress Plugin to Import Facebook Photos (v1)

Overview
I got tired of importing my photos into Facebook and then also having to upload them here. So I made Fotobook to remedy this for myself and hopefully many others. It’s very simple. Grab your public photo link (explained below) and paste it into the Wordpress Fotobook management panel and that’s it! The gallery makes use of the WP Lightbox 2 plugin to make the full images load unobtrusively in the same window. And the options panel makes it very simple to maintain the photo gallery’s apperance.

Installation
- Download and unzip the most recent version of Fotobook
- Upload the entire fotobook folder to /your-wordpress-install-dir/wp-content/plugins/
- Chmod the fotobook-styles.css file to 777
- Login to your WP Admin panel, click Plugins, and activate Fotobook
- Create a new page for your photo albums and then go to Options > Fotobook and select it
- Recommended: install and activate WP Lightbox 2 for the best visual experience
- That’s it!
Importing Albums
- Login to Facebook
- Click “My Photos” and click one of your albums
- Scroll down to the very bottom and copy the public album link
- Go to your WP admin panel and go to Manage > Fotobook
- Paste the link in the input box and click “Import”
- Do the same for the rest of your albums
- If you make changes to your album, just go into the Fotobook management panel and click Re-cache

Curl must be installed to use this plugin. In order to fetch the photo gallery from Facebook, you have to be using a compatible browser and the web server obviously isn’t one. So Curl must be used to tell the remote server that your user agent is a compatible browser. For more info on installing Curl go to: http://www.php.net/curl/

I am having some problems with this plugin. When i try to import the facebook-album into fotobook, the screen just becomes blank, and nothing is getting imported, and the “There are no photo albums”-text shows.

Once again, this is probably due to CURL not being available on your server. The next release will have checks to make sure CURL is installed.

Fotobook only supports Facebook currently. However I do plan on adding support for other platforms in future versions. Were there any specific photo sharing services you wanted support for?
How about adding other platforms like Gallery ?

Did it at first one, amazing, just what I wanted!!
Now adding it to another, opens just the first pic no matter wich one I click plus messing up my theme. Tried on theme had on the other site and same thing.
It’s just the other album I have. Thought was the album, tried with the first album. Same thing.
Really dunno what’s hapening, I’m stucked.
And I have just a week in wordpress and all this php, I’m amazed and still learning, so pretty please, if you can give me some explains or steps, but try to explain so I can understand..

Got it. All I did was to reinstall WordPress all over and rebuild my blogs, lucky me I’m at beginning in adding content and tooked me just one day and a half.

hi, i installed the gallery too. but i got in navigation under gallery the name of the album… i dont want that… how can i get it away?

The plugin looks promising and seems to work great from the demo. I’ve stumbled at the first step however and can’t get the plugin to add my album.

Can anyone add this to thiers and get it to work? I just get the message “There was an error importing your album. Please check the link.”

You will have to go into your theme and change up how the page links are displayed. What you are looking for is the wp_list_pages() function. You need to configure it so that it doesn’t show the child pages, only the first level of pages. To do this, you need to set the depth parameter to -1. Here is an example from my theme:
wp_list_pages('sort_column=menu_order&title_li=&depth=-1');

As of yet, there isn’t an external template file for the gallery’s appearance. This is something I will most likely add in the next release. But you can go into the fb_album_display function and edit things there. I’ve tried to keep the code clean and straightforward. Just keep all the PHP code intact and you should be fine.

I am in big big problem … I have about 60 to 80.000 photos to get inside WP.
I tried almost everything I’ve found but … didn’t work.
I have agreat great software that you just need to droop into a directory and it created auto thumb without problem.
I have remove the header and the footer to make it 500 pix width but how could I get that page showing up inside a post.

Hi there, great plugin works fantastic! I have a suggestion however (that is, IF you are planning on updating the plugin). When an album is imported it would be nice if this one would be added to the top instead of the bottom. People expect new albums on top, like new posts on WP. It would be nice if this was done automatic. Ofcourse I can change the order of the albums, but with more than 15 albums this is taking more and more time. Just an idea

Hi it’s Sarah again, I have one question. Not sure if this is a known bug so thought I’d let u know.
Sometimes it will show an extra . So for instance, I have one album with 2 photos. It will then actually say “Photos 1 - 3 out of 2″ - weird! It also tries showing an extra pic. See “http://www.sarahinlondon.nl/?page_id=190″ for instance. If you have a solution for getting rid of this I’m very much interested

Fantastic, absolutely love it! The problem with writing something so good that it becomes part of hundreds of sites is people like me pop up and request things! I’m wondering if there might perhaps be a way to do sub albums, or give them names different to those of Facebook>

Firstly - wow, what an awesome plugin!
I’m mid trying to move my site from Flickr to Facebook and your gallery is fantastic. I managed to install everything ok, and it seems to run alright … with one exception which does seem a bit odd!
The individual albums seem to work fine - e.g. http://james.preedy.net/facebook-photos/arks-first-game-of-golf/ … however, the main album page isnt displaying at all - http://james.preedy.net/facebook-photos/ . Now initially I thought this may be a browser (I’m using Safari on OSX) but since then I’ve tried Camino and since then Firefox … then booted into Windows and tried IE7 - same problem. It just seems to de displaying a completely blank page. Just to confuse matters further … it seems to be doing the same on your gallery - http://www.aaronharp.com/photo-gallery/ ! I’m now very much confused … any glimmer of light / help would be much appreciated! (Using v1.1.1 btw)

Please check out the latest release. All the bugs that have been submitted have been fixed (hopefully!), and a few suggestions have been implemented.
Soon I will add support for editing the album names and descriptions, using templates, and a sidebar widget for displaying random photos.
Eventually I will add support for other photo sharing services. Besides Flickr, what other services should be supported?

When I got to Install instruction #5 (Create a new page for your photo albums and then go to Options > Fotobook and select it) > Options does not have Fotobook there… what would be the most likely root cause for that?

You are both using newer versions of WP than I am. They must have changed around some things that cause it to break now. I’m swamped with work right now, but I will fix this soon!

Just so you know I am use Firefox 2.x and Safari on an Intel Mac.
Lovin the update, my number one request would be the ability to have subalbums (or at least the appearance of them since facebook itself doesnt have them).

I had deleted from my sidebar pages display as I hate it when I click on main page for pics (or back to album in gallery) messing up my theme and shows the 3 thumbnails of albums upper then header and my theme doesn’t look good at all.

I’ve found a small issue with compatability with the wordpress google sitemap generator, namely when the url for my gallery is http://site.com/photos/galleryone it doesnt see individual gallerys as child pages and adds them as http://site.com/galleryone. Is this something I can fix by simply not being a fool or is it a result of incompatability?

Nevermind, I discovered that a lot of my sidebar php gets bypassed by the widgets plugin I am using, and therefore I need to edit the widgets PHP instead. Great plugin, works a treat.

Fotobook looks great. The only problem is, I never really liked Lightbox (although another great image gallery) I just didn’t like the design. Personal preference, that’s all. Anyway I read somewhere you mentioned you might work on other plugins - have you thought of zenphoto.org? It’s a great photo gallery, very light and I think would integrate well with Wordpress. I’ve seen someone do it but there’s no documentation on how to do it.

Hey there Aaron, I was just wondering, is there an easy way to show some pictures (from one album in facebook) in a post? I mean of course your plugin creates page, this shows the photos, but if you ‘edit’ it, there’s nothing there. So I can’t easily copy paste it into my post. Is there another way, a way around it perhaps? Perhaps another plugin that will work when writing a post? Just thinking out loud here as I have no experience whatsoever in making plugins..

I’ve got a small problem though… Once i’ve created the new page for the album, I go to the fotobook page under options, and when I attempt to select a page for the album to go in, the drop down box only has “Select a page” as an item.

I hate the fact that everytime I post here I’m mentioning a problem - I love this plugin! But I’m jumping on the it doesnt work with 2.1 bandwagon. Any fix even if quick and dirty would be appreciated.
On a side note the issue with sitemaps that I mentioned above ^ is fixed in their latest beta.

Just tried to install your plugin and I’m having some problems. Before I go on, let me say I’m using WordPress 2.1, so this may be the problem…
First of all, I can’t see any pages in the FotoBook options page. The select list is always empty, even if I created the page.
Dunno why… So I had a quick look at the code and it seems the problem is there:
$pages = $wpdb->get_results(”SELECT * FROM $wpdb->posts WHERE post_parent = 0 AND post_status = ’static’”, ARRAY_A);
by removing the post_status=’static’ I can see and select pages, and go on the installation…
The next problem is that the album pages is correctly displayed, but when choosing an album, you’ll get the 404 error, unless you are identified. So if an anonymous user comes on the site, he will get an error.
Seems like posts with the status “static” aren’t displayed if you’re not logged in…

Thanks for a wonderful plugin. Just have a slight error I can’t seem to sort out with large Facebook albums. If the album is more than 40 images, the third page of photos does not display at all and if there are more than about 50 photos then the entire album does not display at all.
Don’t suppose anyone can spread any light on this?

Well, after a bit more investigation, it seems the phenomena I have described above are only triggered when Lightbox is activated. Any idea why this would be the case?

my thumbnails when viewing on Firefox are very small? but in windows 1e they are shown normally… any changes i can make to counteract this?

I took a look at your site and the problem is being caused by the stylesheet for your WP Theme. Specifically, it line 676 in style.css which says “max-width: 100%”. This is causing it to act funny in Firefox. You may be able to remove the line without it having visible effects on your theme. Hope that helps.

I really dig this plugin. I’m having a little trouble getting it to work though. Here are the errors I get when I try to import an album.

It’s also telling me “You must select a page for the photo gallery in the Fotobook Options panel before you can import albums.” That’s one thing I know I’ve already done. I followed your instructions above to the letter. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks a million.
Great addon for wordpress!! Though one or two things I’d like to say:
Ability to upload photos directly would be amazing!
And, on my page anyway, I’ve noticed that all photos on my site, regardless of being in the album or just a normal post are loaded using the lightbox. Not sure whether this is to do with fotobook or lightbox directly, but is annoying if you have a huge photo that takes ages to load, as once you click, you have to wait for it to load.

How can you show a certain number of albums on one page and do the pagination for say numbers 11 and more?
I now get fewer errors. I’m not sure why. But my errors are as follows:

OK, I was having the “There was an error downloading your album, please check your link” problem. I’m not sure if it’s related, but the plugin seems to work very slowly. I was able to nail my problem down to the url name lookup, and it was timing out in the fb_get_url() function. I haven’t fixed the problem, but I made it work…though its still slow.
This is how I did it:
change line 224 in fotobook.php from ‘if(function_exists(’curl_init’)) {’ to ‘if (function_exists(’curl_init’) && 1 == 0) {’.
Now obviously this is a pretty poor way of fixing, and its not fixing it, but it allows it to work, for me anyways. So, people having the same problem as me, try this, but if it breaks your blog, not my fault!

I’ve tried installing teh latest version as a plugin to WordPress2.1, yet I’m getting errors that state the following:

This was starting to happen occassionally with an earlier version of your plugin also. Are you able to shed any light on the issue please ? I’ve disabled the Lightbox Plugin to see if that has helped, & re-imported each of the albums also.

I get the same errors if I set ‘Number of Columns’ to 0 under the Options->Fotobook tab in the admin panel. Check to see if that option is set to 0 on your site.

Hi Aaron, sorry to bother you, again! This is a very strange error though. Not sure what to make of it. I certainly haven’t come across it before. I imported an album with 55 photos, but on my website it keeps on showing an album with 75 photos, it doubles the first 20 - I really can’t understand why! I’m also having the same problem as Pauline and Sara with the duplicate photos. It doesn’t add an extra 20 photos to all of my albums, it just seems to be the ones that have more than 20 photos in them.
Great plugin tho Aaron, I used a flickr plugin before this but this fotobook blows it out of the water. Keep up the good work.
Sorry guys, my life has been crazy and will continue to be for the next week or so. I’m aware of the problem with the 20 extra photos and I will get to it ASAP. Sorry for the annoyance!
Ok, the bug has been fixed and I’ve added some more features just to be nice
Make sure you read the release notes. You have to deactivate and reactivate the new version for it to work right.

I still receive the following errors with the new version when I try to import an album:
WordPress database error: [Lost connection to MySQL server during query]
SELECT * FROM wp_fb_albums ORDER BY ordinal ASC
WordPress database error: [MySQL server has gone away]
SELECT * FROM wp_posts WHERE ID = ‘3′ LIMIT 1

I was actually unaware of WordPress MU until you mentioned it, so I haven’t done any testing on it. I’ll put it on my to do list, but I can’t really say when it’ll be done. Sorry!
It looks like the Facebook redesign has broken the plugin
I just get a Javascript popup with no message when I try to add an album now.
I got the same pop up error message when I re- cached the album(s). And then I deleted the album from my WP fotobook admin panel and imported the link again however I received an error :
“There was an error importing the album. Please check your link.”
Stupid Facebook! I agree with the people above, I get a strange popup error window. It won’t let me import a new album
I don’t know if this works with the update to facebook yesterday. Has anyone tried it?
Great plugin, I installed yesterday and it was working great until facebook changed their interface. Now I can’t import albums (same blank javascript error as mentioned by other people above). Would love to see a fix for this as I was loving the plugin for all of 16 hours until facebook broke it!!

Hello ive upgraded to 1.3.1 and im getting the following errors.

Also when the album is added i only get the first 20 pictures of the albums.
Hi!! I’ve downloaded your plugin, and I think it’s absolutely amazing! However… it deactivates half my admin panel’s functions (ie. Presentation page and Users - they do not load/are blank) and so I’m wondering if your plugin is compatible with Wordpress 2.1.3?

i want to know my album shows the thumbnails in the middle of the writing… is there a way to align this so that they sit at the top alignment with the writing? have a look at my site and you will see what i am talking about… it looks a little messy and the thumbnail gets confusing with the description

I think I’m doing something wrong with the new plugin version. I installed version v1.2.1 in a wp site and worked nice, and I was so happy with it some later I tried to install it in another wp site (hosted in another server).
Once I installed and activated it I noticed Facebook has a new look, so I checked your site to see if there was any update and I found the new v1.3.1 version. I installed it in both sites and from then on it does’nt work in any site. I followed all instructions but I can’t see what’s going on.
On the first site, now I updated the plugin I cant import any photo album, and when I re-cached the current albums all photos where erased. That’s weird cause previous version did’nt give me any problems. Please check this link and see how it looks now…

Great plugin! Easy to install and works like a charm. I have just one small question. The text and links in the overlay are not very easy to read. Now they are grey, is there any way I can change the color myself, to e.g. white? How and where should I do this?

I’ve got some problems with importing the albums.. It worked before but not any longer.. It says that there was an error importing the album and that I should check my link.
